I recently had an interesting discussion with a CEO of a company and the topic intrigued me. We were talking about branding and the overall image of his company. I mentioned to him about the idea of implementing through his business a way that his business could help fight against human trafficking or some other cause. The reason I had brought that up with him was due to a past discussion about him wanting to help with some sort of good cause. But, during this discussion when I brought up giving back through the brand and how people would view his company he said, “You know, I am from more of an old school way of thinking. Where business is strictly about making money. That is the point to a business, to make money”. Now, please understand, he wasn’t disagreeing with my suggestion, but he was having a hard time with it.
In today’s business world, there are many brands that are very much about giving back or standing behind a cause. I guess you could call this the “new school of thinking”. Now I understand that there are companies that have done this simply to make themselves look better. But what I am talking about is being real and having the right motives.
In my way of thinking is, if you choose to make your business about strictly about making money, where are you going to build greater loyalty between you and your customers? But, if your business has a greater cause, wouldn’t that strengthen the loyalty between you and your customers and even your employees? Where your customers and employees know they are helping towards a greater cause.
Does your business have a greater purpose than just making money? I do believe your business should be making money, otherwise it is more of a hobby. But once your business is making money, why wouldn’t you want your business to have even a greater impact on the world and make people’s lives better? This is something here at Rule Your Realm we are just starting. For example, which every Street Smart Branding CD we sell, we give 50% to fight against Human Trafficking.
So here is my question for you…
Do you believe your business and your brand should be about more than just making money, or should your business be separated from a special causes? Let me know what you think below.
Stay tuned for my next blog post as I will be going deeper into what we are about to start to help give back in greater ways! 🙂
Keep moving forward!

I strongly believe that a Brand can make a brand new difference in one's life, the ones that are less fortunate. In order to make for a better society with more jobs and more opportunities is if we help and support one another. With that being said, YES I support a business that supports a cause. I am starting one myself I believe in education and access to it by ALL! So, I decided to offer that.
I like your cause and I sure hope to see results with the money raised.
Hi Doina!
Thank you for your support! I am happy to see that there are professionals such as yourself that are willing to make a difference. I hope everything that you are starting finds major success and changes lives everywhere! 🙂
Thanks again Doina.
Interesting idea, Paul! As a solopreneur, I'm personally generous with donating a portion of my earnings, but haven't thought to tie it in to my business. I do like the idea! Thanks.
Thank you for your comment Louise! Yeah, it is a little different way if thinking, but it is awesome that you are already giving back! That is really what it is about.
Keep up the great work Louise! 🙂
I worked for a global brand company where their products were used for those who loved the outdoors! They began to incorporate special causes for integration into their marketing. They chose projects that needed greater funding that were related to the outdoors. One was to keep the national parks clean – related to the outdoors. The other was timing – they support relief efforts to help those suffering from the hurricane Katrina and needed products to live in the environment with better protection. It made national news too! Not too shabby for cause marketing.
Hi Cheryl! What a great example of a company doing good and reaping the benefits of it! Thank you for sharing that Cheryl, that is great. 🙂
